This may be my most popular photo from the 2021 season! This shot was taken in the middle of Lower Mountain Fork river just south of Beavers Bend State Park. It was a clear moonless night. I took my son Landon out with me for an astrophotography outing. It was right at the beginning of fall, so the water was still hanging onto a bit of warmth from the lingering summer heat. So we hopped from rock to rock, and eventually waded out into the river to find this one bald cypress, surrounded with boulders and noticed it had a log trapped against the bottom of the trunk. You could see where the rising and falling rush of water from the spillway had scraped and chewed up the bottom of the tree, but to me it told a story. As calm as it was, it told about the previous months where the slow moving stream had been a raging torrent. With the Milky Way glowing on the horizon, I set up and shot a long exposure at the tail end of the twilight glow from the setting sun to get the foreground. Then Landon and I just chilled out and enjoyed a long conversation on “our rock” as I waited for the sky to turn black. Then I shot a series of long exposures on the star-swept sky, putting them together as a composite—in an attempt to show how it looked to stand there knee deep in one of the most captivating spots in all of Broken Bow.
